Pangani is an ideal destination if you are looking for an authentic seaside resort away from the hustle and bustle of tourism.
Pangani is a small town of around 8,000 inhabitants on the east coast of Tanzania, 45 kilometers south of Tanga, the region’s capital. It has a long history: Arabs, Indians, Germans and British alike have left their mark here. This history has not always been glorious, as Pangani’s geographical location meant that it was for a long time the third port after Dar es Salam and Bagamoyo in the slave trade.
The town itself has not really managed to maintain its interest, but the coastline offers a unique attraction. From north to south of Pangani, the white sandy beaches stretch as far as the eye can see. They are still uncrowded and calm, providing the perfect opportunity to enjoy a few days of peaceful far niente.
In several places, the mangrove and coral reefs stretch for several kilometers. Walking through them at low tide is a magical experience. At high tide, the sea is easily accessible.
There are a number of activities on offer: take a 3-hour cruise up the Pangani River to discover the mangroves and their inhabitants. Or take a day trip to Maziwe Island.
Hotel Emayani
Superior hotel. Magnificent rooms and food. Perfect staff. White sand beach directly accessible from the hotel. Being on the other side of the Pangani River, access requires an additional hour and a half. Crossing the strait of less than 200 meters is a quick ferry ride. However, if the ferry breaks down, the detour to the other side takes several hours. And, as you may have guessed, it does happen!
Bahari Pori (approx. 6 km from Pangani)
Magnificent hotel (5 cottages, 1 family cottage). Very nice place, beautiful spaces, very friendly owner, restaurant and breakfast area with exceptional views. Lovely rooms, modest but well-decorated, spacious and bright. Swimming pool. Delicious food.
At high tide, access to the ocean is direct. At low tide, on one side, there’s a superb mangrove for several hundred meters (probably a few kilometers) and a coral reef that we cross to go swimming.
On the other side, there’s less coral, less mangrove, so access to the ocean is easier.
Choba Villa
This magnificent villa has four large bedrooms, a huge living room and a large terrace. A cook and waiter are available for the same price. The beach is directly accessible from here.
